An old faith, seen in new light
The Roseville New Church is a place of worship for those seeking to understand the Bible and the nature of God through the theological writings of Emanuel Swedenborg. We are the Sydney Society of the New Church, trading as Roseville New Church.
We worship the Lord Jesus Christ as the one true God, in heaven and on earth. Our aim is to deepen our understanding of His love and wisdom, to share the distinctive doctrines of the New Church, and to help one another lead joyful and useful lives — in the present and the hereafter.
Our values
There does not exist the person the Lord does not love. It is the continual effort of the Lord to draw all people towards Himself, that each of us may experience heavenly states in this life and to eternity. Though difficult to comprehend, it is this expression of love we desire to manifest in the world as a New Church community.
“All who live well, of whatever religion, have a place in heaven.”
Divine Providence 330
Understanding the Bible
On its surface the Bible can present a confusing picture of God — especially when its words and stories are taken only literally. Jesus often criticised people for missing the spirit of the law while keeping its letter. We read the Word with the help of Swedenborg's teaching that Scripture has an inner, spiritual sense: true lessons spoken in parable, clothing a deeper meaning so that it may be received and not falsified.
With that knowledge we seek a greater understanding of the true nature of God and our purpose in this world and the next. You don't need to know anything about Swedenborg to visit — come as you are, ask anything, and stay for morning tea.
What to expect
Walking into a new place can feel intimidating. We want you to know you are welcome here — a warm community where everyone is accepted and valued.
When you arrive you will find quiet contemplation with pre-service music. The service begins with an opening hymn. We provide a pamphlet with the order of service and the hymns for the day, so you always know what comes next.
Afterwards we invite you to stay for refreshments and conversation. A pouch at the back of the sanctuary is there for free-will offerings to support the church; we do not pass a collection during the service, so please enjoy your first visit without any obligation to give.
