A moving farewell issue as minister Howard Thompson and his wife Debra leave Sydney after eight years. Howard's "Providence" essay traces how Divine Providence is only ever visible in hindsight, through two personal stories - a Crosby, Stills & Nash lyric that confirmed his call to Australia, and how his brother's death by suicide decades earlier quietly reshaped the whole course of his life. His companion post-Easter reflection, "As He Died to Make Men Holy," reframes "laying down one's life" away from heroic battlefield imagery and toward the harder, daily work of surrendering pride and self-will. Debra's own warm, funny goodbye closes out the issue.
