What Happens When We Die?

One of the most common spiritual questions is also one of the most personal: what happens when we die?

In New Church teaching, death is not an ending of the person but a transition. The essential self — our loves, memories, and character — continues. Swedenborg describes awakening in the spiritual world, where we are gradually drawn toward communities that match the loves we have freely cultivated.

This is not meant to frighten, but to invite responsibility and hope: heaven begins within as we choose lives shaped by love and usefulness.
